Before Stormy came into my life, one of my puppy families told me about something called "Potty Bells". I had never heard of them before but found some on the internet and ordered a set. Those fell apart, but we have come up with our own beautiful version of this great idea and it is a winner.
Three bells are attached to a crocheted/knitted rope which is hung over a doorknob in your home. It reaches almost to the ground so even the smallest puppies can reach it. Then you train your puppy to ring the bells and you can hear them ringing from anywhere in your house. Now you do not have to be within sight of the door at all times in order to know that your puppy needs to go outside!
What we did was to ring the bell for Stormy and say the word "POTTY" each time we took her out. It was not long before she knew that ringing the bells meant that she got to go outside. Once she made that association, she started ringing the bells on her own. The task of housebreaking was made a thousand times easier!
